Care and measuring guide

How to choose the right size, and how to keep your pieces looking good for years.

Measuring for your space

Rugs

  • Measure the area you want the rug to cover and mark it out with painter's tape before you order.
  • In a living room, a round 4 ft rug suits a reading corner or the space in front of an armchair. For a coffee table area, choose a rug at least as wide as the table plus 12 in on each side.
  • Use a non-slip rug pad on hard floors.

Curtains

Panel lengthRod height above floorLook
84 in83 to 84 inJust grazes the floor on standard 8 ft ceilings
96 in95 to 96 inHung high for a taller-looking window

For a full look, use two panels per window and choose a total panel width of 1.5 to 2 times the width of the window.

Pillow covers

Choose an insert 1 to 2 in larger than the cover for a plump, filled look. For an 18 x 18 in cover use a 20 x 20 in insert, and for a 20 x 20 in cover use a 22 x 22 in insert.

Caring for your pieces

Ceramics and stoneware

Our dinner plates and mugs are dishwasher and microwave safe. Avoid sudden temperature changes, such as moving a plate straight from the fridge into a hot oven. Vases are for decoration and fresh flowers; wipe them with a damp cloth.

Linen and cotton textiles

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle with similar colors and tumble dry low, or line dry. Linen softens with every wash and is meant to look relaxed, so light creases are normal. Wash pillow covers inside out.

Jute rugs

Vacuum regularly without the beater bar. Blot spills right away with a dry cloth and avoid soaking the rug. Keep it out of damp areas and rotate it every few months for even wear.

Wood serving boards

Hand wash with mild soap and dry straight away. Do not soak or put in the dishwasher. Rub with food-safe mineral oil every few weeks to keep the wood from drying out.

Candles

On the first burn, let the wax melt to the edge of the jar to prevent tunneling. Trim the wick to 1/4 in before each use, never leave a burning candle unattended, and stop using it when 1/2 in of wax remains.

Mirrors and glass lamps

Clean with a soft, lint-free cloth and a little glass cleaner sprayed onto the cloth, not onto the mirror. Use the bulb type and wattage listed on the lamp.
